Elder Dragons, or Native Dragons (ネイティブドラゴン), are creatures regarded as deities in the Rune Factory series. The first four main installments prominently feature at least one of the four; with Terrable in the first game, Fiersome in the second, Aquaticus in the third, and Ventuswill in the fourth. Each correspond to a specific element: Earth, Fire, Water, and Wind, respectively.

History[]

The Four Native Dragons fought against the Legendary Golem in a war that destroyed the world. Then, after it was sealed away, they created the current world. In the event that a land is sapped of its runes, a Native Dragon is burdened with the duty of watering the land with their lives, thus replenishing the runes within the area. Due to their great power, the Elder Dragons are respected throughout the land as gods.

Roles[]

Terrable (プロテグリード (Protegreed): The Elder Dragon of life and nature, he is the dragon god of the earth, presiding over resurrection. In the lore, Terrable's role is to bring life back to the world following its destruction by Fiersome. Lynette would claim that Terrable descended from a Grimroire before gaining its powers. The Sechs Empire believed an Earthmate could be used to wake Terrable from its slumber and cause a rampage for them in Kardia. In the end, this was thwarted by Raguna, and the calmed Terrable defeated Ethelberd's forces; covering all their artillery with vegetation and rendering them unusable.

Fiersome (フレクザィード (Flekzeed): The Elder Dragon of Fire presides over "Destruction", and his sole mission is to lay waste to the world and pave the path for Terrable's renewal. To keep the planet safe, the ancient Earthmates have locked him in a seal that must be regenerated every 1,000 years. At one point, Kyle had learned that Fiersome's seal was on the brink of collapse and fused his soul with Fiersome's to further hold back its power. When his child finds him at Palermo Shrine, they defeat Fiersome and send him back to the Forest of Beginnings.

Aquaticus (アクナビート (Aqunabeet/Akunaveet): He presides over "Transformation." His exact role in the world is unknown, but due to his aquatic nature and his title as god of water, it could be inferred that he might have control over the seas and everything in it. His relationship with transformation seems to overlap with Terrable's role in life, albeit Aquaticus being more focused on animals and peoples. In Rune Factory 3, he believes the world's life to be in danger due to the withering of the Sharance Tree, and he uses Micah, a half-human, half-monster Earthmate, as a tool to repair the bond of humans and the Univir. To further this goal, he kidnaps Micah's would-be spouse to push Micah's bond with his fiancé even further to finally make the tree bloom.

Ventuswill ( セルザウィード (Selzaweed): She presides over the "Abyss of Time," though her exact role in the world is unknown besides her duties as the guardian of Norad and overseeing matters in Selphia. Due to her title as the goddess of wind, it could be inferred that she might have control of the weather and/or sky. In Rune Factory 4, she nearly passed away on previous occasions but was saved through several friends, later known as Guardians, sealing themselves away and continuously providing rune energy to her while in stasis. Guilty over this, she asks Lest/Frey to rescue the guardians, and the latter would later leave Rune Sphere Shards in the place of the Guardians to compensate for their absence.
